Blood Disorder Awareness
Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma along with other blood disorders such as sickle cell need a blood stem cell transplant to survive.
This is why part of Dorothy's Pearl mission is to raise awareness of blood cancers and disorders to get more registered donors. Minorities especially African American's are the most effected by sickle cell. The best match for a patient is typically someone who shares their ethnic background.
Currently only 29% of African American's are able to find a match with only 8% of potential donors on the registry.
For over 35 years NMDP (formerly Be A Match) has managed the bone stem cell registry. Along with matching patients with blood stem cell donors and facilitating the transplantation of those life-saving cells.
Dorothy's Pearl is now connected with NMDP to raise awareness and increase the bone stem cell registry. With every purchase you make from our Kimmie Pearl Collection 10% will go to NMDP. But if you're not interested in purchasing you can go directly to the NMDP page and donate using the link below.
All donations help.
$5 covers the cost of coffee for a patient to fuel them after a visit.
$25 covers the clinic visit co-pay. Marrow transplant patients must visit the transplant clinic daily or weekly during there 3-6 weeks of outpatient recovery.
$100 supports ultra-high resolution HLA typing of a pair of donor-recipient research samples for use in studies to improve understanding of matching for successful transplant. The dollars you give can help NMDP advance transplant research.
$500 secures one week of temporary housing during transplant recovery.
If you or someone you know between the ages of 18-40 is interested in being a match you can also use the info below to register to be a part of the stem cell registry.
